Epilogue

Just for the record, we showed 7753 miles, 29 days on the road, 20 states, 1 province, 33 summits (that we kept track of), sea level to 11, 158 ft, crossed the continental divide 4 times, 67 fuel stops, 408.1 gallons of fuel at avg price of $3.048 per gallon for a total fuel cost of $1243.95. We averaged 19.0 mpg overall, 19.24 with overdrive (4414 miles), 18.67 without overdrive (3339 miles). We changed the oil once. We added 1/2 quart of oil to the engine, two quarts to the transmission, and about 1/2 quart to the radiator overflow bottle. We boiled once on a low gear climb in 110 degree heat. We were stopped once for a short time by mechanical problems when the overdrive took a header. We flirted with vaporlock anytime the temperature was over 100 degrees.

We had over 11000 hits on our Blog.... We are wondering just how many people were tracking us so here is a request for all you folks that followed our progress. Click on the word "COMMENTS" at the bottom of this posting. When the comments page comes up, type your name and where you are in the box on the right side, and then click on "Anonymous", and then click on "Login and publish". This will put it on the blog in the comments section. We are just curious, I know lots of folks watched us and did not make comments or send us emails. thanks a bunch for all your support and good wishes, I think that's what helped all those A's make it all the way home.

Alex Fucile, a friend of Jack Castor, followed your travels every day. It was a most interesting journey for both the travelers and the "wish we were along folks". I could have used a few of the ice cream stops. My home, as Jack knows, is in Santa Clara.

Let`s see--how many miles would it take to save on gas to pay for a new overdrive that mite cost $2000??If you are driving Bob M`s car--he got 19.24 miles per $3.04 in fuel with overdrive and 18.67 without--that equals $.005 in savings per mile--So it would take 400,000 miles or 54 trips across the USA--Now if you factor in the loss time because you are going slower without the overdrive then if you devide your hourly rate into the cost of the overdrive you will find that you can not be without it!!And it even gets better with 36%Enough math for now--Had a great trip with great friends and hope to see you soon bill rose

The air conditioners can be purchased from Ken Davis in Texas. They are wonderful.

Thanx so much for keeping us all informed of your daily episodes on your journey. I for one had a blast following along and giving my thoughts all the while. I'm a friend of Jacks And just the other day Met Don for the first time (quite a nice gentleman) while Jack was explaining how his roadster was on a flatbed for the final part of the journey home. I'm figurein they all had just about enough by then (thats Jack, Don And the roadster) that that flatbed was prolly looking real comfy by then. And I'll bet that ol flatbed had trouble keeping the speed under 70. lol That musta been a shock to all by then .

Hi Bob and Pat,
Following your progress on the blog was a lot of fun. What a great summary about the "A", and expenses. I think cars were built to last in the old days. I never would have thought it could last in such gruelling conditions; maybe it was because you are a good engineer and Pati prayed a lot. Say hi to the family. take care, susie from WA

Again, congratulations on a job well done! I followed your adventures and mis-adventures everyday - used Streets & Trips, Google-Earthed you to get the "lay of the land", and at times I wished I had gone along. Then, other times.....
Thanks for keeping an eye on Jack & Don - I was playing the role of Worried Wife very well. You know: "please, please just let me hear his voice" then as soon as I did, I morphed into Worried FishWife, "WHERE ARE YOU - WHY HAVEN'T YOU CALLED!!! (expletives deleted)" All wives and mothers can relate, I'm sure.
Thanks for keeping the blog. I know the Wild West is not wired very well, and it is a tiresome and thankless task to keep updates going. But you did a great job. I printed it all out (over 100 pages!) for Don to read.
You all no doubt agree, it was the adventure of a lifetime - lots of good memories for you. Hope to meet you all some day - Don thinks you are a great bunch of people. I think so, too.

Carol Stewart (Don's wife).

P.S. Ladies, Don said you signed a pact never to do this again. The pain wears off with time, and all you remember is the fun, so I bet you change your minds.

To Bob Sanders:

My car came into Winnemucca, Nevada thirty miles on the flatbed truck, after it ate its timing gear. I was on schedule to make it into Winnemucca in time to have a Basque dinner at the Martin Hotel. The car lost its drive suddenly, and I pulled over at 6 p.m. A passerby stopped and took Don into Winnemucca, where he located the motel the group was going to stay in (they were at the Martin Hotel having a good Basque dinner). Then he contacted AAA. They picked me up promptly and brought the car and me into Winnemucca at 80 mph. The group was back from dinner, and the car was repaired and running in an hour. The next day the car ran 480 miles to Half Moon Bay. I ate at MacDonald's that night in Winnemucca, because it was too late after the repairs to go to the Martin Hotel.

What a wonderful journal of your trip. sorry I didn't have the blogger url, or i would have commented a long the way.
Let me first say, that I am extremely glad that We did not choose to drive the Phaeton (Tuckie) to MA. The trailor on the back of our "super comfort wagon" was definitely the way to go.
We arrived home on Saturday, 8/19, after 51 days, and visiting CA,MO,IL,IN,OH,MI,PA,NY,MA,CT,NJ,MD,
DE,VA,NC,SC,GA,TN,AR,OK,TX,NM,AZ.
23 states! The majority of them had temperatures of 95-100F. Williams, AZ was the coolest.
We drove 6,270 miles in 135 hours, averaging 46.3 mph. we used 712 gals of diesel at $2.86 to $3.10 per gal. We spent $1,957.67 on fuel.
I had 2 problems with the A. I tore the muffler off backing off the trailor in Detroit and I had to reset the points.
One of the higghlights of our trip was in Urbana, OH, Where Linda acquired the moniker of "Linda, the de-riviter" in memory of "Rosie, the riviter".
We worked on restoring a B-17. We removed about 400 rivits in a wing panel. The project will take about 80,000 man hours and should be done in 9-10 years.
We will be ready for Dallas,08.
Glad everyone is home and safe.
See you at the Sep meeting.
Jack Hubby
